Play Like a Pro: Shooting While in a Vehicle

There are 3 types of weapons that you can use while operating a vehicle. The pistol, a sub machine gun and the Molotov/grenade can all be selected while driving in GTA IV. To fire a gun inside a car simply hold R1 and aim the firing reticule using the right analog.

Cars with their windows up will cause Niko to first smash them out with his fist if you press L1. A good habit to get into is breaking out the glass beforehand if you know that you are going to use a gun or grenade soon.

To change weapons while in a vehicle, press square. You do not need to reload a weapon while in a car, it is done automatically for you.

Play Like a Pro: Fighting Hand to Hand

Fighting hand to hand skills can be very useful while going about your business in GTA IV . To select a target simply hold the L2 button to lock-on to them. There are several different types of attacks that Niko can perform while in a fighting stance.

#1 Kicking: Niko can throw kicks using the square button. Kicks are useful due to their long reach and decent speed. Use the kick when the enemy is too far away to punch or when they are moving in to attack you.  Kicks can also be used to close distance to your target, as Niko will throw the kick and move forward quickly afterward. Should you perform the kick too close to your target, Niko’s kick will turn into a quick shin kick. Finally, you can kick the enemy while they are on the ground, and Niko will either kick them in the ribs or perform a stomp.

#2 Punching: Niko can throw two different types of punches. The first type of punch uses the circle button. These punches are jab type punches that are quick, but not very damaging. The other type of punches are punches with the triangle button which are more powerful and can end in Niko head butting the enemy. As with kicks, Niko can punch enemies on the ground for extra damage.

#3 Shoving: Niko can shove opponents by running and pressing the circle button nearby a person. Shoving an opponent may result in them falling over, making them easy pickings for a beating on the ground. Niko is not the only one who can shove however, enemies in combat can also shove Niko which will stun him for a short time and throw him backwards.

Keep in mind that taking damage in fist fights drains your health total, body armor does not absorb damage from punches and kicks. When fighting citizens on the streets of Liberty City keep an eye open for other civilians who may join in the fight and gang up on you. For example, gang members and drug dealers will come to aid their friends, and attacking women can result in a nearby citizen coming to their aid.

Play Like a Pro: Diving Out of a Vehicle

Diving from a vehicle is a handy tool should you ever inconveniently realize that your car is on fire, with 4 cops chasing you. Turn it into a rolling bomb by gaining speed and pressing triangle. Be warned however as the faster the vehicle is traveling, the more likely it is that Niko will take damage when he bails out.

Once Niko has dove out of a vehicle he will be “injured” on the ground.  If you press X repeatedly you can get Niko up faster  – a handy technique to know if you’ve got 20 cops about to surround you…

How to Use Cheats in GTA IV

The cheat system in GTA IV is done through the cellphone. By calling various telephone numbers you will receive different effects such as health and armor, guns and ammo and many more. Once you have input a cheat, a new menu within the cellphone will become available called “Cheats.” Take note that all GTA IV cheats have the second line of digits 555 in them. For example the cheat for full health and ammo is “362 555 0100.”

If you want to reuse a cheat – simply go to the cheat menu and select the cheat you wish to use. Keep in mind that whenever Niko is taking damage and the cellphone menu is active, it will cause him to automatically put away the cellphone.

*Remember, using cheats in GTA IV may disable certain achievements within the game, and you should not save your game if you wish to unlock them.*

Tips and Tricks: The Stoppie

To perform a stoppie, you must first acquire a motorcycle, or a scooter (scooter stoppies!)

Gain some speed on the motorcycle/scooter and then hold down the brake (L2) button while holding the left analog stick forward.  The end result will lift the back end of the bike into the air, while you slide or stop on the front tire.

Smashing a fire hydrant with a car in GTA IV will cause a powerful water geyser to form. If you run into the geyser Niko will be spent sprawling, and take some damage. Not exactly game breaking information, but very funny nonetheless.

Play Like a Pro: Rolling

The roll is a handy maneuver that can be used to throw off enemies aim, avoid fire and can even be used to dodge from cover to cover!

Performing a roll is very simple.  While using auto-aim or using the free-look mode, press the left analog stick left or right while pressing square to roll in the corresponding direction.

Rolling has several advantages.  For example,  rolling from side to side makes Niko extremely difficult to hit, and allows him to avoid the line of fire for a short period of time.  You can also use the roll to dodge behind objects such as pillars or walls, then quickly take cover behind them.

The Wonderful World of Internet Dating

Once the Internet Cafes become available to Niko in GTA IV, he will be able to participate in some highly entertaining internet dating. Head to any internet cafe in Liberty City and access a computer using L1. There is a link on the main page to www.love-meet.net, where you can view different profiles from various citizens to date.

The portfolios are themselves worth the read, as many of them are over-the-top parodies of different stereotypical personality types. Niko can select any of the available portfolios and hit the “date” button to send out a match making request. Within a few in-game hours you can return to the cafe and see view your emails to see what the person had to say about Niko. If the request was successful, you can then arrange a date with the individual.

Calling 911 in GTA4

The cellphone can be a handy tool to cause chaos in Liberty City. For instance, you can call 911 in the free-dial screen of the cellphone to send the Police, Paramedics or even the Fire Department to your location!

To enter free-dial mode simply hit UP on the D-pad twice until you can see the entire number keypad. Dial 9-1-1 and hit the green phone icon to call emergency services. Pressing one will send a Police cruiser to your location (useful if you are on a mission that requires you to steal a police cruiser.) Pressing two will send the paramedics to your location, who will heal you for a fee if you are wounded. Finally, by pressing three on the keypad, emergency services will send a firetruck to your location.
