Great Spots for a Legendary Stand-off: Grand Boulevard Police Station

Here is another excellent spot for a police stand-off in GTA IV. Head to the Police Station in Grand Boulevard.  Beside the station is a small parcade with 5 police cruisers.  Use the police cruisers to block the main entrance adjacent to the street.  Place one cruiser in the middle as cover, and another to block the back steps entrance.  Let the mayhem begin!

Police helicopters may attempt to shoot you from the space inbetween the roof and the wall, just takethem out with the RPG.

Great Spots for a Legendary Stand-off: Weapon Shops

Go into any weapons store and kill the weapon vendor.  Be prepared, as several other heavily armed gang members will attack you from the right and they must be killed quickly.  From here on in just guard the door and kill and police that come in, as it is the only way into the area.

Unfortunately, you can’t use any of the weapons strewn about once the vendor is dead.

Enemy Health Bars

Yes, you can view how much health an enemy target has while using auto-aim (L2 button.)  The enemy’s health bar is displayed within Niko’s aiming recticle and shown as the circulor bars around the aiming dot.  The same is true while fighting an enemy using auto-aim with Niko’s fists or a knife/bat.

Listen Carefully

In GTA IV, enemies will often announce their intentions to other enemies nearby.  If you pay attention, you can use this to your advantage to avoid being flanked or “jumped” by enemies rushing right up to you.  Enemies may state something like “I’m going in” or “I’ve got a shot” when they are about to rush you or have you in their sights.  React accordingly, and you can escape from some pretty tight situations.

If at First You Don’t Succeed…

If you fail a mission, you do not have to drive all the way back to the mission start to re-accept it.  Simply bring up the cellphone and open up your messages.  Select the mission text message (titled by the name of the mission,) and press either X to accept or circle to decline it.  Keep in mind if you decline the mission from the text message, you will have to go back and re-accept it manually.  Very, very useful if you managed to rack up a high warrant level attempting to complete a mission, as you can just restart it and lose you wanted level hassle-free.

Great Spots for a Legendary Stand-off: Starr Street Apartment

If you are looking for a great place to have a redonculous police stand-off in GTA IV try this area.  On Starr Street there is an apartment building with several staircases.  Head up to the balcony infront of the apartment entrance, and take cover behind the balcony wall.  Use this position to shoot enemies, and take out the police helicopters that attempt to snipe you from the air.  See how long you can survive without moving positions.

Using the Waypoint System

The way point system is extremely helpful while navigating through Liberty City.  To place a way point, open up the main menu by pressing start.  Select “Map” from the menu.  You will be presented with a map of Liberty City.  Press X to enter the map mode, you can zoom in by holding R2 and zoom out by holding L2.

Select a place to out the way point, and the game will automatically calculate the route there for you.  Exit back out and follow the dark green line on the radar to your destination.  It’s as easy as that.  Note that the route the system uses to calculate your destination is NOT always the fastest way to get there.

Missions will automatically point you to your destination with via a solid yellow line.

Using Headlights in Your Vehicle

If you want to put on the high beams in the car that you are driving, simply hold the square button for a second or two.  You can alternate between the high beams and the regular lights by holding the square button.  Using the headlights can only be done at night when it is dark.

Play Like a Pro: Jumping, Vaulting and Climbing

The key to Niko’s survival depends on how well you can avoid gunfire and make use of Niko’s mobility to escape sticky situations.  Niko has several skills that allow him to quickly overcome obstacles that block his path.

Vaulting: Niko can quickly jump over low-lying obstacles such as railings or walls.  Simply press the square button as you press up against the object you want Niko to jump over.  You can also use this to jump over overpasses to escape the police (making sure it’s not too far of a fall or Niko does a vaultSPLAT.)

Jumping: Niko can jump perform a jump by pressing square.  In a standing position he will jump up and down.  Use this if you wish to grab onto a ledge, fence etc.  Niko can also perform a running leap by pressing square while jogging or running.

Climbing: Niko can climb objects within reach if you press square beside while standing beside them.  Examples include cars, fences, boats, rooftops, and ledges, plus many, many more.  If you are hanging from a ledge, you can press the triangle button to let go and drop down.

Special Citizens in Liberty City

You may have noticed while driving around Liberty City green person-like icons on the radar.  These icons signify a person Niko can interact with for a side mission.  These people can be someone Niko has met or spared in the past – for example Dwayne’s former girlfriend (if you let her live during a previous mission.)

Generally these missions are short, and revolve around a problem that that particular person is facing.  Niko will either be asked to help or will take the matter into his own hands.  These side missions offer cash rewards upon completion, and help to flesh out the characters a bit more within Liberty City.
